CHP Chairperson Özgür Özel Elected as Vice President of the Socialist International

Özgür Özel, Chairperson of the Republican People's Party, was elected as Vice President of the Socialist International at the Socialist International Council Meeting held in Madrid hosted by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.

Following Özel's election to this position, the Republican People's Party will be represented at the Executive Board of the Socialist International at the level of Chairperson after a 12-year break. Commenting on his election to this position, Özel said, ‘We advocate that social democrats should act together against the rising far right and authoritarian populism in Europe and the world. My election will enable us to get in touch more frequently with our political relatives in order to develop social democracy in the world. Social democrats in Europe and around the world need to speak out more loudly against the tragedy in Palestine. I hope that this mission will be instrumental to this, and I believe that by representing our party and our country in the best way possible, I will contribute to the fight against authoritarianism, which is the problem of the whole world.
