On February 6, the earthquake centred in Kahramanmaraş caused tremendous destruction that will affect the future of our country. The main reason for the destruction caused by the earthquake is an understanding of urban development that desolated to rent, ignoring scientific reasoning and the public interest, and the institutional collapse that led to a significant lack of coordination in disaster management.
The fact that the places with the most intensive building stock in many settlements are the areas most affected by the earthquake is a consequence of the rent-oriented political will that has led to distorted and uncontrolled construction. On the other hand, it is incredibly concerning that public investments and services for earthquakes, disaster management, and disaster logistics did not stand up during the earthquake.
The devastation has exposed the fact that the disaster management approach needs to be restructured and strengthened, as well as the economic, political, public administration, health and education systems at the national level.
In this context, the Republican People's Party has decided to formulate a "National Disaster Strategy" and maximize disaster sensitivity, considering all these negativities. As a first step in preparing the National Disaster Strategy, we have invited and continue to invite scientists from different engineering branches, urbanism/architecture, sociology, health, management and logistics working on disaster-oriented issues. In addition to the contributions of scientists, the policy framework and implementation plans will be structured with the contributions of professional organizations, relevant non-governmental organizations, experts with field experience and volunteers. Coordination will also be ensured with the parliamentary work of our MPs. The CHP Secretariat General coordinates the work.
