A total of 61 political parties from full member, candidate, and observer countries of the European Union have issued a declaration of support for the Republican People’s Party.
Left-wing, social democratic, and socialist parties released the statement titled “CHP Congress: PES stands with CHP, the strong voice of democracy in Turkey” as follows: “As the Republican People’s Party convenes in Ankara for its 39th Ordinary Congress, the Party of European Socialists sends a strong message of solidarity to its sister party and to all those in Turkey who defend democracy and fundamental rights. PES and CHP have built a long-standing political cooperation rooted in democracy, social justice, equality, and human dignity. CHP Chair Özgür Özel’s participation at last month’s PES Congress in Amsterdam once again demonstrated the close ties between our parties and our shared commitment to democracy and social justice. On the occasion of the CHP Congress, PES reciprocates this support and openly reaffirms its friendship, cooperation, and solidarity with CHP. Our alliance goes beyond daily politics and is grounded in a shared vision of a future in which freedom, rights, and justice are fully guaranteed. This Congress not only strengthens CHP’s position within Turkey’s political landscape but also supports a broader democratic opposition in an environment of increasing political pressure. PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck stated: ‘CHP stands at the center of the democratic struggle in Turkey. As PES, we stand firmly alongside our sister party and all those who continue to defend pluralism, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law often under severe pressure. Our solidarity is strong, consistent, and unwavering. As we stated during the PES Congress in Amsterdam, we once again call for the release of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and all individuals unjustly imprisoned for their political views including opposition members, journalists, academics, and human rights defenders. Democracy cannot flourish in an environment where critical voices are silenced or criminalized. This Congress sends a powerful message of hope to all who believe in democracy, social justice, and the rule of law. PES will continue to stand with everyone working for a freer, fairer, and more democratic society in Turkey.’ At a time when opposition parties, elected representatives, and peaceful demonstrators face increasing pressure, PES reminds that genuine democracy requires open political competition, an independent judiciary, and full respect for fundamental rights including freedom of expression, association, and assembly. In this context, PES once again reiterates its call for the release of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, as a requirement of democratic choice, the right to a fair trial, and the rule of law in Turkey. PES remains committed to maintaining close cooperation with CHP for a future in Turkey built on democracy, social justice, and fundamental rights for all citizens.”
